Now Calvin is almost 2, and he would never ever sit still in a basket for a photo
I’m glad I captured these photos when I could! Read below for some photography tips I wrote. These tips are written about my son’s photos, but they are applicable to any type of photography client.

We call him Cal Boy around the Gravelle house. He is the sweet little man in my life! As you can see, he is willing to be put through some ridiculous baby photo shoots so that his mom can have the satisfaction of capturing these sweet little memories! What a trooper! I had just finished another photography session at my home studio, so I thought I should quick capture a few shots of my own little guy at 10.5 months old.
As a Denver wedding photographer, I get so busy taking photos of other clients. I have to make it a priority to set up photo shoots for my own kids. I got started in this business when I had my first little girl, Lily, and I wanted to get fantastic photos of her. I studied and studied and practiced and practice. Are you a mom out there who just wants to get great photos of your own children? Check out these photography tips in my FAQ post and then some more below -
1. Find the best light in the room. This is usually just next to a large window. Place your baby or child so that the light is shining either directly on their face or from the side. For these photos, I just used my dining room where I had a large sliding door just off to camera right. The soft light was illuminating Calvin and bringing out the catch lights in his eyes. I angled him towards the window a little bit more a few times during our baby photo shoot until I got the light to bring out that little sparkle in his eye – because that is what brings so much emotion into a photo.
2. Focus right on the child’s eyes. If you are using a DSLR camera, toggle the red focus point that you will see when looking through your viewfinder and put it smack dab on their eye. That often should be the sharpest point of your photo and this is how to achieve that look!
3. Get the focus point set and then lean out from the camera and get the child to smile! It’s all about the interaction because then the looks that the child gives are authentic and natural rather than the classic “cheese” shot.
4. The photos will stand out as extra special by using some creative photography props. This can be as simple as incorporating some baskets, hats, and blankets. You can use the same background and get very different look photos just by switching around the photography props.
Go ahead and experiment and post some of your photos to my Laura Gravelle Photography facebook page. I would love to see what you come up with!
These photos of my little Calvin boy absolutely melt my heart! I am so thankful for my job and that I get to include my own little sweethearts in front of the lens.
