Have you ever had a mentor couple in your life that has helped shape who you are today? I have. Their names are Jason and Dana and they are the parents of these 3 good looking kids! Now looking back, I realize they were younger than I am right now when they came into my life and started giving themselves to me and so many of my friends. They were the youth pastors at my church back home, Vineyard North Church, during my teen years. We’ve traveled with groups together around the world from camping trips in Killarney Provincial Park in Canada, leading a rustic youth camp in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, long youth group road trips to the Florida Keys, and a few days in Naivasha Town, Kenya. Those are all such fond memories of mine, and Jason and Dana were always right at the center of those activities. I can even remember the day that all of my friends and I erupted in cheers because they told us that they were expecting their first baby. Now that baby, Emily, is in high school! Makes me feel a little old! The climax of it all was the day that Jason led Matt and I through our wedding vows in front of all of our family and friends.
Their front door was always wide open to my husband Matt, me, all of my friends, and now to people around the globe. They continually give to people in hard circumstances. In 2005, they founded an organization called Kenya Matters. In just the few short years since the organization began, an entire rural community in Kenya has received hope in so many practical ways. The vision statement of the organization sums it up well - Kenya Matters addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of orphans through empowering local African leadership with self-sustainable enterprise projects in partnership with an active donor community in the United States. Emily, James, and Owen are so fortunate to have parents like Jason and Dana. Their Michigan home has turned into a small farm! Before our photo shoot, Owen excitedly took me on a tour of their property to see the duck pond, the pig pen, and the massive vegetable garden. And yes, those are chickens in the backgrounds of some photos! Chickens, chickens, everywhere!
What a fantastic family! You will always have a very special place in my heart.
I’ve chosen a song for their slide show that will always bring back memories of my monumental teenage years with Jason and Dana. Now they are modeling for their kids what it means to give generously to others in need of hope in life.
